What are the Grand Mosque's opening hours?

The mosque's visiting-hours page lists 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM from Saturday to Thursday, with last entry at 8:30 PM. One other official page on the same site gives 8:00 PM as last entry. To be safe, arrive before 8:00 PM.

Friday is different. Visitors can enter from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM (last entry 11:30 AM). The mosque then closes for Friday prayers and reopens to visitors from 2:30 PM to 9:00 PM. A Friday morning visit is the tightest. Leave Dubai early or go after 2:30 PM.

Ramadan hours change completely. In the first 20 days of Ramadan the mosque publishes a daytime slot (9:00 AM to 6:00 PM) and a late-night slot (9:30 PM to 1:00 AM). In the last 10 days, only the daytime slot is listed. Fridays in Ramadan open from 2:30 PM. Check the official page for the exact dates each year.

How much does it cost to visit the Grand Mosque?

Entry used to be free. In September 2026 the mosque introduced a visitor fee:

VisitorFee
Visitors from outside the UAEAED 10
UAE residents with an Emirates IDAED 5
Visitors arriving with a licensed tour operatorAED 8
Worshippers coming to prayFree

UAE media also report free entry for visitors aged 60 and over. This isn't yet on the mosque's FAQ page, so bring ID and check at the gate.

On a Desert Thrill tour, the mosque entry fee is included in the tour price (shared and private), so there is nothing to pay at the gate.

Do you need to book a Grand Mosque visit?

Yes. The mosque asks visitors to pre-book online and get an access pass, which you show on your phone at the visitor entrance. Book through the official site's visitor booking page. People who arrive without a pass may be sent to the booking page. That can mean a wait on busy evenings.

Free guided tours run every day in English and Arabic. They start on the east side of the mosque, and you should be there about 15 minutes early. Ask at the visitor centre for the day's tour times.

What is the dress code at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque?

The rule is long, loose and not see-through. From the mosque's own guidance:

Women

  • Loose clothing down to the ankles, with sleeves to the wrists.
  • Hair fully covered with a headscarf.
  • No tight, short, transparent or revealing clothes.

Men

  • Long trousers are strongly preferred. Cover your legs.
  • No sleeveless, tight or see-through tops.

Everyone

  • Avoid slogans or images on clothing, heavy make-up and lots of jewellery.
  • The marble floors can be slippery, so wear shoes that are easy to walk in.

Can you borrow an abaya at the mosque? Don't count on it. The mosque stopped lending abayas to tour-group visitors years ago, and we found no current official mention of abaya hire. Arrive dressed correctly, and bring a scarf if you're a woman. Shops in the Souq Al Jami' area near the mosque sell simple abayas if you get caught out.

What are the rules inside the mosque?

  • Keep your voice low and your phone on silent.
  • Take photos only for personal use, and only where staff allow it. Professional or commercial filming needs a permit from the mosque.
  • No food or drink inside the prayer halls.
  • No smoking or e-cigarettes anywhere on the grounds.
  • Don't lie down or sleep inside.
  • Don't bring flags, banners, laser pointers, lighters, sharp items or soft toys.
  • Avoid public displays of affection.
  • Keep children with you at all times.

Wheelchairs are available from the security team for visitors who need them. Club cars run between the car park and the entrance.

How do you get to the Grand Mosque from Dubai?

The mosque is on the edge of Abu Dhabi city, about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes by car from Downtown Dubai or Dubai Marina on the E11.

OptionTime each wayGood for
Private car or tour with hotel pickup1h15–1h30Families and groups, Friday visits, anyone short on time
Taxi or ride-hailing1h15–1h30Couples who only want the mosque
Self-drive1h15–1h30Visitors with a rental car. Park in the southern car parks.
Public bus via Abu Dhabi bus station, then taxi2–2.5 hoursSolo travellers on a tight budget

Driving yourself means booking your own access pass, finding parking and fitting around Friday prayer times. A tour from Dubai handles all of that, and usually adds stops on the Corniche, at Emirates Palace and outside the Louvre.

Tips from our Abu Dhabi drivers

These come from the Abu Dhabi trips we run every week.

  • Queues are rarely the problem. The mosque has many entrances, and in our experience guests almost never wait long to get in. The one exception is December and January, when the middle of the day (about 12 to 1 PM) gets noticeably busier.
  • The drop-off point changes. Where we park depends on which side has space that day, so your guide tells you the exact meeting point as you get out of the car. Note it, or take a photo of it.
  • The best photo spot is the large open marble courtyard in the centre, facing the main prayer hall.
  • Early start. Hotel pickup in Dubai for our half-day tour is about 7:30–8:00 AM in winter and about 9:00 AM in summer, so you reach the mosque before the midday crowds and heat.
  • Fridays: we get guests to the mosque at about 10:00–10:30 AM, well before the 11:30 AM last entry, so the visit is finished before Friday prayer. Friday visits are shorter than on other days. If you want the full 1.5–2 hours inside, pick another day.
  • Bring your own scarf or abaya. Our cars don't carry spares yet, and you can't rely on borrowing one at the mosque.

When is the best time to visit?

  • Quietest: opening time (9:00 AM) on a weekday.
  • Most beautiful: late afternoon into sunset. The white marble turns gold and the lighting comes on after dark. It is also the busiest time, so book your pass early.
  • Most comfortable: October to April. In summer, go first thing in the morning or after about 6:00 PM, because the courtyard marble gets very hot.
  • Avoid: Friday late morning. Visitor entry closes at 11:30 AM for prayers.

How long do you need at the Grand Mosque?

Plan 60 to 90 minutes inside for a self-guided visit, and 2 to 3 hours if you join a free guided tour and visit the museum. With the drive from Dubai, the mosque alone is a half-day trip. Add the Louvre Abu Dhabi or Qasr Al Watan and it becomes a full day.
