Self-drive does not mean unsupervised. A guide leads the convoy out to the dunes and guests follow in their own machines, so there is always someone ahead who knows the terrain, sets the pace and can stop the group.
The desert is not a car park with dunes in it. Sand conditions change through the day, and the difference between a good line and a bad one is not obvious to someone seeing it for the first time. Following a guide who drives it daily is the single largest safety factor in the activity.
Every driver gets a full safety briefing covering how to operate the vehicle, what to do and what not to do on the sand, and how the convoy works. Helmets and goggles are issued where the activity calls for them.
The briefing is not a formality to rush. If something in it is unclear, ask before you set off rather than after.
Every driver signs a waiver before setting off. Alongside safe operation, it makes the driver responsible for the cost of damage to the vehicle.
That is because desert vehicles cannot be insured. Insurers do not write cover for self-drive machines operating on dunes, so no operator in this market can offer it — anyone who tells you otherwise is describing a policy that does not exist. Driven within the briefing, the waiver stays a formality; we put it here rather than in the small print because it is a real commitment and you should be able to weigh it before you book, not after you have paid and travelled.
The minimum age for buggy drivers is 16. Younger passengers, typically from four to ten years, can ride along with an adult driving.
Dune driving involves fast movement over uneven ground. We do not recommend it for pregnant women or anyone with a serious back, neck or heart condition — a camp-based or gentler desert experience is the better choice, and we will happily point you at one.
